Nancy Dimock and Joel Zavala

Even though Nancy Dimock and Joel Zavala are professional musicians, their request for this shoot was a family photo -- but a family photo with a twist. They wanted something unusual, not your classic, rather staid, and very posed husband-and-wife portrait they might have gotten somewhere else. So we experimented with fun interactions, intimate glances, artsy lighting and the like, before the idea dawned: since they ARE musicians, why not at least have some sheet music in their hands? From there we degenerated into paper throwing. We only hurled the sheet music four or five times (it was a mess to clean up after each shot!) but were graced with this spectacular moment. And no, there was NO way to tell if we'd captured the precise moment -- when the papers were airborn but the faces were visible -- until the film was processed! George Eastman must have been smiling down on us from above....
